Restoration of antique furniture is not only an art it is a vital component of keeping the value of your oak furniture. If your antique furniture is beyond restoration and you must go the furniture refinishing route to stip the original finish off then put a tung oil finish on the stripped wood. As a collector, we buy antique furniture for the original finish. Which if you have ever watched any of the collectible shows you know that the value diminishes dramatically if you must put on a new finish. So before you do that you owe it to yourself to try to preserve, restore and revitalize your treasures first.
